Your Child's Music Lessons: A Parent's Guide to Success

The Trio for Success

The success of a child’s studies in music require a commitment from all of us—teacher, student, and parents.

Instruments at home

Help your child soar with music lessons! Providing a suitable instrument for practice at home is key to success.

While we prefer a well-maintained acoustic piano, a full-sized keyboard with a pedal attachment can be used in the first year.

Flute students will also need a good quality instrument to maximize their potential.

Read my BlogPiano vs. Keyboard: How to Buy the Right Instrument for You” for tips and suggestions for purchasing the right instrument for you or your child.

For flute students, visit my blogHow to Choose a Flute for Beginners: Rent or Buy?” for tips and suggestions for getting started on your flute journey.

Parental Support and at-home practice

Parental involvement is important for your child's musical success. Depending on your child's age and level, they may need reminders and assistance with practicing. Younger students benefit from short, frequent practice sessions throughout the day, while older beginners may need occasional check-ins. Setting a consistent practice schedule and giving positive praise will help your child build good practice habits and stay motivated.

In all cases, parents should always give positive praise and encourage their child to “perform” for them!

Parent Support Away From the Piano

In addition to ensuring regular practice time is accomplished throughout the week, parents should expose their children to music away from the piano. Some ideas include:

  • Listen to a wide variety of music at home and in the car

  • Attend live performances together at local parks, churches, theaters, and more.

  • Search the internet for interesting history about the composers a student is studying

PRACTICE MAKES FUN!

Practicing has a bad rap because students often don’t know how or what they need to practice.

Each week I assign a customized practice plan tailored to the needs and goals of each student.

Not all practice is created equal. By implementing proven practice strategies, coupled with mindful practice throughout the week, progress is guaranteed!
